“Pantanos de Villa Visit” Grade 10
Our Grade 10 students visited the “Pantanos de Villa”
as part of our Environmental Education plan, whereby
they had the chance to observe different species of
birds and understand that although they all looked
very much alike, they had different feeding habits and
roles in this ecosystem.
Much attention was given to the black-headed vultu-
re, since students noticed competition for the canopy
of palm tree where they stay. The students noticed
that there were few healthy palm trees for such a large
vulture population and identified a conflict between
these two species, hypothesizing that if the popula-
tion of palm trees were to decrease, the population of
vulture would decrease too. This was a great moment
for them to understand the idea that with some good
observation and critical thinking they were able to
propose an interesting ecological hypothesis.
