SENIOR SCHOOL
Grade 9 Study Visit to Sedapal
On Thursday 14th August a group of stu-
dents from Grade 9 visited the water treat-
ment plant of Sedapal in Ate. Every day
they clean upmillions of litres of water from
the river in order to provide water for the 8
million inhabitants of Lima. During the gui-
ded tour we observed the various steps the
water from the river Rimac has to go throu-
gh before it is ready to be consumed.
After a process of filtration the water is left
in big tanks where chlorine is added (which
can give you a big headache, we found
out!). Chlorine is actually added several ti-
mes during the process in order to make
sure there are no harmful bacteria left in
the water once it leaves the water treat-
ment plant. The water treatment plant is
very big, and for most of the time during
the visit we stayed on the bus. Occasiona-
lly, our guide would allow us to get off the
bus to see a part of the process up close. At
the end of the visit we were shown a few
examples of how the filtration works on a
smaller scale and we did some laboratory
experiments.
