Short Story Competition
My clothes got all dirty with a mixture of snow
and mud. I groaned and opened my eyes again –
that’s when I saw it.
There was an apple tree right in front of me, so
tall I couldn’t see the top. But the top didn’t ma-
tter to me: in the bottom of it, a greenish light
illuminated the roots dimly. Someone might have
forgotten a toy there, I though. Or it was that un-
til the light turned yellow, then red, then purple,
blue and orange. That wasn’t a toy, and I was sure
about that, but then…
What was that light there?
I got near it slowly, curious as I had always been.
I noticed I had some leaves in my dark black hair,
but it didn’t matter in that moment. I reached one
root, wanting to see whatever there was in the-
re, until I heard a metallic sound. I turned around,
and saw a man – I couldn’t see his features, but he
was tall, really tall. And he had… a sword?
In that moment, everything turned black.
‘’Wake up,’’ said a warm and gentle voice, ‘’wake
up now.’’
My eyes fluttered open seconds later. What had
happened? Everything around me seemed stran-
ge. I was inside something that seemed to be a
cave, with rock walls and torches on them. And,
across the room, there was a lady.
The lady must have been the most beautiful per-
son in the world. She had extremely long hair but,
for my surprise, it had a purplish tone and some
white hairs. Her eyes were blue as the sky, and
she had red lips. She wore a white nightgown and
was shoeless as she sat inside what seemed to be
a bird cage.
‘’Oh, you finally woke up,’’ she said, smiling, ‘’Wel-
come, Paige.’’
‘’How… How do you know my name? And where
am I?’’My heart pounded loudly on my chest.
‘’Don’t you remember me?’’
Now that was weird. I had never seen that lady in
my whole life, but she looked at me as if she knew
me since forever. Her face turned sad and tears co-
vered her eyes in a matter of seconds. I got scared
and walked backwards, noticing that I wasn’t insi-
de a bird cage like her.
‘’How can you not remember your mother, Paige?
How?! ’’ She screamed.
Her eyes turned red and her long hair turned as
black as mine. Her nightgown turned from white
to black as she stood up. Her eyes screamed insa-
nity as she started to scream and hit the cage like
mad. That was enough for me to run away.
The halls were also made of rock at the beginning,
but suddenly they turned green. Then yellow.
Then red, purple, blue and orange, just like the li-
ght that I had seen before appearing there. It was
ridiculous. It had to be a dream, it just had to. I
could still hear the insane lady’s screams as I ran
for my life.
She couldn’t be my mother. My mother was tall
and slim, had brown hair and honey eyes. Maybe
that lady was mad or something, but she wasn’t
my mother… right?
No, no, she wasn’t. I was a hundred percent sure
she wasn’t.
The hall turned into doors as I reached the end
of it. They might have been about thirty doors,
all of them with different shapes and colours. The
screams weren’t there anymore, but I was still sca-
red that the lady might come for me, so I just ente-
red to one door: the red and golden one.
There was a library in there. All I could see were
books, all of them in brown bookshelves that
