SENIOR SCHOOL
6th Grade Study Trip Huachipa Zoo
native to South America, and the aviary
house where they could appreciate va-
rious exotic species found in the Peru-
vian rainforest. The kids took many pic-
tures of Sumac, the white lioness born in
this zoo. The students were most enthra-
lled by the marine exhibitions with sea
otters, Humboldt penguins and sea lions.
The icing on the cake came at the end,
when a professional trainer introduced
them to an overly friendly sea lion who
enjoyed kissing the trainer and waving
at the students, along with Jack the pen-
guin who the students were allowed to
touch and notice how dense and warm
his skin was, an adaptation necessary
for Humboldt penguins to survive in the
chilly waters off the Peruvian coast!
All in all, grade 6 had a fun day out whi-
lst being led by professional guides who
explained to them the importance of
conserving nature, not just in Peru, but
worldwide. This helped them open their
eyes to how crucial it is at this time in
particular to act upon protecting ani-
mals in their natural habitat before it is
too late.
On 6th of June students from 6th
grade visited Huachipa Zoo to
learn about animals, their adap-
tations and why conservation is
so important in the modern day.
They attended an interactive wor-
kshop where zookeepers showed
them samples of fur and skin in
different types of reptiles and
mammals and let them touch ani-
mals such as the caiman and the
vicuña, to demonstrate why these
adaptations help them survive in
their natural habitat. The tour took
us through specially designated
areas where the students enjo-
yed seeing animals close up and
personally. Mammals like big cats
and spectacled bear, the only bear
